Skyrocketting prices of agricultural products more particularly of onions which was reportedly being hoarded by some unscrupulous traders has prompted the municipal government of Hermosa, in Bataan province to acquire a cold storage and resorted to planting.
In his most recent FB page, Hermosa Mayor Jopet Inton disclosed that the municipal government of Hermosa has acquired a cold storage unit capable of storing 20,000 bags of onions.
The cropping season of this important kitchen component is at most two times a year.
Harvested onions usually last up to six months.
“Kung walang imbakan, mapipilitan ang ating mga magsasaka na magbenta sa mga traders,” the mayor said.
Inton said a 50-hectare land in Barangay Mabiga, Hermosa will be developed in preparation for the next planting season.
The municipal government had been coordinating with the Department of Agriculture which will provide technical assistance to onion farmers.
“Hindi lang taga-Bataan ang makikinabang dito kundi pati na mga onion traders from Pangasinan and other neighboring provinces,” Inton explained.
